Thank you for your question. If the thumbscrew on the top of the pitless adapter has broken off, the pump can usually still be removed, but the exact method depends on which part of the thumbscrew broke and whether the threaded portion is still inside the adapter. In many cases, the broken screw can be removed using a screw extractor (easy-out) after drilling a small pilot hole in the center of the broken piece. Once the screw is removed, the pitless adapter can be loosened and the drop pipe and pump can be pulled normally. If the screw is completely seized or the head broke off flush with the adapter, a well contractor may need to remove it using specialized tools to avoid damaging the pitless adapter or dropping components into the well. Because well pump systems vary and repairs at the well head can affect the integrity of the installation, we generally recommend having a qualified well technician handle removal if the screw cannot be safely extracted. If you’re able to share a photo of the broken thumbscrew area, we may be able to help identify the best next step.
